HOMEMADE PRETZELS RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
4 tsp yeast
1 tsp sugar
1 1/2 c warm water
5 cups flour
1/2 c white sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 T olive oil
1/4 c baking soda
2 c hot water
kosher salt
1-2 Tbs butter, melted

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a small bowl, mix yeast and 1 tsp sugar with warm water
  2. Allow to stand for 5-10 minutes until mixture becomes foamy
  3. In a large bowl, mix together flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and salt
  4. Add in oil and make a well in the center
  5. Add in yeast mixture and use a mixer to thoroughly mix dough together
  6. Add in an extra 1-2 T water if dough is too dry to work with
  7. Knead for about 5 minutes (7 minutes by hand)
  8. Form into a ball and lightly oil ball
  9. Place in large bowl and place a towel over top
  10. Place in a warm area and allow to double in size
  11. In a medium bowl, mix baking soda and hot water together

Preheat oven to 450F

  1. Once dough has doubled in size, form into a log shape
  2. Cut into 12 equal pieces
  3. Roll each piece into a rope and twist into a pretzel shape
  4. Dip pretzels in the baking soda/water mixture and place on greased baking sheet (6 pretzels per sheet)
  5. Sprinkle with kosher salt
  6. Bake in oven for 8 minutes until lightly browned
  7. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter

Whatever you do, make sure you’ve lined your tummy in your Lederhosen if you’re going to be downing a few of these big boys!
