Lei out your grass skirt and Okanuis

– it is time to PARTY Hawaiian Style

What better way to get into the spirit of summer than a Luau or Hawaiian style party? Follow these simple steps and you’ll be dancing the Hula in no time…

  1. Send out invitations to fellow beach goers on surfboard, thong or palm cards
  2. Encourage guests to tap into their inner Surfer / Surfie Chick – bright and vibrant boardies or Okanuis, grass skirts, floral shirts, thongs (flip flop variety), sandals
  3. Decorate using old surfboards, hibiscus, sandpits (if outside), Island coolers as an ice bucket, beach balls or paper lanterns or Tiki. Use cool cups with cocktail umbrellas in them, cut up heaps of pineapple chunks, use fake or real palm trees to put all over your house, create your serving dishes out of a coconut, pineapple, or palm leaf

  4. Have plenty of leis on hand to ensure all Surfies are adorned with colourful florals
  5. Whether the weather is kind or not, set up your beach scene in a warm spot
  6. Get a CD of Hawaiian music or download Hawaiian .mp3s from the internet. For relaxing moods, you should probably play Kapena or Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. For more of a “up-beat”, play Three Plus or Ten Feet. Research on local artists, such as Pepper and Jack Johnson
  7. Serve Hawaiian food and drinks with coconut milk, pineapple, fire up the BBQ to grill mahi-mahi (AKA dolphinfish) or chicken, other fresh fruits, and juices. Be ready to divide up leftover food for this delicious menu

It then followed that early Australian surfboard manufacturers started making similar shaped boards. And along with the new boards came new surf wear. Various long boardshorts were then developed to help avoid the chaffing on the inside of the legs caused by sitting on the waxed surfboards.
